Sabiha Gökçen Airport to Istanbul: Metro, Bus & Night Arrivals

Planning your route from Sabiha Gökçen Airport to Istanbul? Choose the route around your hotel’s neighbourhood, luggage and arrival time. SAW is on Istanbul’s Asian side and is different from Istanbul Airport (IST), so check the three-letter code on your booking before choosing a transfer.

For the Sabiha Gökçen Airport to Istanbul journey, the M4 metro is a useful starting point for a hotel in Kadıköy. For Sultanahmet, expect a connection. For Taksim, compare the direct Havabus service with a taxi or pre-booked transfer. A cheap route that ends with a difficult walk can be a poor choice after a long flight.

Using the M4 metro

An Istanbul metro platform; this is not the airport station.

Sabiha Gökçen Airport has a station on the M4 Kadıköy–Sabiha Gökçen line. Ayrılık Çeşmesi provides the connection to Marmaray. Check the current route and service information from Metro Istanbul. The M4 does not take you directly to Sultanahmet.

If you are staying near Sirkeci, use that station as a destination when planning the Marmaray section. For Sultanahmet, inspect the final walk on a map. A suitcase, hills and busy pavements can affect your choice. Next, check every connection’s operating hours. An open airport station does not guarantee the whole journey.

Before boarding, read our Istanbulkart guide and public transport guide. Keep enough payment capacity for transfers and the return journey; do not base your budget on a single ride.

Havabus to Taksim

Havabus provides an airport–Taksim service. On 12 October 2026, its official route page listed a fare of 485 TL and an approximate journey of 1.5 hours, depending on traffic. Treat that duration as an estimate, not a promise.

For your arrival, read the timetable labelled airport to Taksim. The opposite direction has different departure times. The Taksim stop is at the Gezi Park metro exit area; a hotel described as “near Taksim” may still involve a substantial walk. Have your hotel address saved offline and check whether the route includes steps.

What if your flight lands at night?

Istanbul’s official night metro information from Metro Istanbul includes M4 in the Friday and Saturday overnight service. This does not establish overnight availability on every weekday or for every connecting line. A late M4 ride is only useful if you can also complete the rest of your journey.

Havabus publishes information about services for delayed flights, but the timetable presentations on its pages can differ. Before a late arrival, confirm the airport departure for your travel date with Havabus. Do not build your plan around an unconfirmed “last bus” quoted in an old blog.

Prepare a fallback before flying: an official taxi queue or a transfer with a written price, flight tracking and clear meeting instructions. Ask whether the quoted transfer price includes tolls, waiting and your luggage. Avoid accepting an unsolicited offer simply because someone approaches you inside the terminal.

A simple arrival checklist

  • Confirm SAW rather than IST on your flight booking.
  • Save your hotel’s exact address and check its late check-in procedure.
  • Plan from the time you expect to exit arrivals, allowing for immigration and baggage.
  • Check the last available connection and choose a fallback.
  • Keep your booking details and route available without mobile data.

If your ticket says IST, use our Istanbul Airport to city centre guide instead. Still choosing accommodation? Our neighbourhood guide explains why the airport transfer should be part of that decision.

What a previous arrival was like

In the November 2024 Reddit report “My 7 day itinerary in Istanbul in November,” Interesting_Stock325 described travelling from Sabiha Gökçen to a Fatih hotel by metro and tram in about 1.5 hours. This is a self-reported journey, not a guaranteed transfer time. Allow for baggage, connections and the walk to your own hotel.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sabiha Gökçen Airport the same as IST?

No. Sabiha Gökçen uses SAW and is on the Asian side. Istanbul Airport uses IST.

Does the M4 go directly to Sultanahmet?

No. You need a connection and a final walk or local transport leg.

Can I rely on metro service all night?

Check your date and every connection. Weekend night service on one line does not guarantee a complete overnight route.

Transport information checked against official Sabiha Gökçen Airport, Metro Istanbul and Havabus operator information on 12 October 2026. Fares, timetables and service disruptions can change; check again before departure.
