Passenger ferry on an Istanbul waterway, a practical alternative to repeated taxi trips

Istanbul Ferry Cancelled? How to Cross Without a Boat

Istanbul ferry cancelled? If you are trying to get between the European and Asian sides, start by checking Marmaray and the metro rather than walking from pier to pier. When rail services are running, you can cross beneath the Bosphorus instead of waiting for a boat. The useful route depends on where you are standing and where you need to finish.

Quick answer: From Kadıköy, take M4 one stop to Ayrılık Çeşmesi and change to Marmaray towards Sirkeci. From Üsküdar, Marmaray reaches Sirkeci directly. For the reverse journey, start at Sirkeci and choose the Asian-side direction. Check current service notices before leaving the pier.

Istanbul ferry cancelled: check the operator first

Open the official Şehir Hatları cancellation page and look for your route and departure. However, a scheduled timetable only describes the planned service; it does not prove that the next boat will run. If the notice is unclear, ask pier staff before paying or moving to another terminal.

Check the operator on your ticket or pier sign, too. A notice from Şehir Hatları does not automatically describe every private boat company, sightseeing cruise or intercity ferry. Equally, seeing another boat on the water does not confirm that your particular sailing accepts passengers.

This is a backup-route guide, not a live cancellation bulletin. Fog, wind and other disruptions can affect routes differently. Rail services can also change, so check the alternative before relying on it.

These routes connect mainland districts. They do not provide a land connection to the Princes’ Islands or replace an intercity sailing to Bursa.

Kadıköy to the Old City without a ferry

  1. First, find the M4 Kadıköy metro entrance. Follow M4 signs rather than signs for the T3 Moda tram.
  2. Next, board towards Sabiha Gökçen Airport and get off at Ayrılık Çeşmesi, the next station.
  3. Then, follow the signs to Marmaray. Check the platform display for a train stopping at Sirkeci on the European side; this is the Halkalı / westbound direction.
  4. Finally, get off at Sirkeci. Choose your onward route from there, rather than assuming every Old City attraction sits beside the station exit.

Metro Istanbul confirms the M4–Marmaray interchange at Ayrılık Çeşmesi on its official M4 line page. Use station signs and the train’s stop list to confirm the direction before boarding.

For Sultanahmet, you can check T1 from Sirkeci towards Bağcılar and leave at Sultanahmet. Allow time to reach the tram stop from the Marmaray platform. With a suitcase or pushchair, follow the accessible route and ask staff about lift availability.

Getting back to Kadıköy from Karaköy or Eminönü

From Karaköy, T1 towards Bağcılar serves Eminönü and then Sirkeci. Leave at Sirkeci and follow signs to the separate Marmaray entrance. From Eminönü, compare the walk to Sirkeci with the tram option for your starting point, weather and luggage.

At Marmaray, choose an Asian-bound train that stops at Ayrılık Çeşmesi, normally signed towards Gebze or another eastern terminus. Check its stop list. At Ayrılık Çeşmesi, change to M4 towards Kadıköy and ride one stop. If your destination is Üsküdar, leave Marmaray there instead.

The official T1 station list helps you check the tram section. A station on the same line can still have a street-level transfer, so leave room for the walk between services.

If your Istanbul ferry is cancelled late at night

Check the last usable departure of every rail section before starting. One operating line does not guarantee that your connecting line will still run when you arrive. Allow for the transfer, platform access and the final journey to your accommodation.

I would save the hotel’s full address, check the route while I still have mobile data, and tell the hotel if a delayed arrival affects check-in. If the rail connection no longer works, compare a road journey using your exact destination and current traffic. A bridge crossing can involve congestion and additional charges; do not assume a fixed journey time.

Our Istanbul night metro guide explains the wider planning questions. For a flight, use a separate airport plan: the Sabiha Gökçen guide and Istanbul Airport guide cover different airports and routes.

What if you are on the Princes’ Islands?

Marmaray cannot bring you off an island. Check your actual ferry operator’s notices and speak to staff about the next confirmed service. If a long suspension changes your overnight plans, contact your accommodation and airline or tour operator as relevant. Do not assume that an unconfirmed private boat will solve a weather-related cancellation.

For advance planning, see our Princes’ Islands ferry guide. Choose an island visit with enough flexibility to handle a changed return sailing.

Save these details before you set out

  • İptal: cancelled.
  • Sefer yapılamamaktadır: the service cannot operate.
  • Ayrılık Çeşmesi: the M4–Marmaray transfer used in this guide.
  • Sirkeci: the Marmaray arrival point for these Old City routes.
  • Keep enough payment balance for the alternative journey and check the fare shown at each gate. A cancelled ferry does not make the rail alternative automatically free.

Route connections and official information sources checked on 23 October 2026. This guide does not confirm live operation, lift status, fares or last departures. Use operator updates and station displays for your journey.
