Sirkeci Marmaray Exits: Getting to the Tram, Ferries and Your Hotel

Arriving at Sirkeci on Marmaray? Decide where you are going before you follow the Sirkeci Marmaray station exits toward street level. For the T1 tram and Eminönü waterfront, your destination is the Sirkeci station/waterfront side. For the Governor’s Office on Ankara Caddesi, use the Cağaloğlu exit. If you need lifts, follow the accessible route rather than assuming the nearest escalator leads to a step-free exit.

Last checked: 2 November 2026. Routes follow the official Metro Istanbul, Şehir Hatları, TCDD Marmaray and Governor’s Office pages linked below.

Which Sirkeci Marmaray station exit do you need?

Where you are goingWhat to doWhat to avoid
T1 tramTake the route toward Sirkeci Garı and the tram connection; the tram is a separate surface service.Following Cağaloğlu just because it is an available exit.
SultanahmetTransfer to T1 toward Bağcılar; Sultanahmet is two stops after Sirkeci.Boarding toward Kabataş.
KaraköyTake T1 toward Kabataş; Karaköy is two stops after Sirkeci.Boarding toward Bağcılar.
Eminönü ferriesHead toward the station/waterfront side, then use your ferry’s actual departure pier as your walking destination.Navigating to a generic “Sirkeci ferry” pin.
Governor’s Office / ValilikUse the Cağaloğlu exit for Ankara Caddesi.Confusing it with the historic station entrance.
A local hotelMatch its street address and entrance to the street where you emerge.Choosing an exit from “Sirkeci” in the hotel name alone.

The official T1 page confirms the connections and stop order. The Governor’s Office address specifically identifies Marmaray’s Cağaloğlu exit.

Getting from Marmaray to the T1 tram

Marmaray and T1 are different services. Leave the Marmaray paid area and take the route toward the historic Sirkeci station and tram connection. At the surface, find the T1 Sirkeci stop rather than the T6 railway platforms.

Choose the direction before boarding:

  • Gülhane, Sultanahmet or Beyazıt–Kapalıçarşı: toward Bağcılar. The sequence is Sirkeci → Gülhane → Sultanahmet → Çemberlitaş → Beyazıt–Kapalıçarşı.
  • Eminönü, Karaköy or Kabataş: toward Kabataş. The sequence begins Sirkeci → Eminönü → Karaköy.

If service is disrupted, follow the operator’s current notices rather than this normal-service stop sequence.

Getting to an Eminönü ferry without choosing the wrong pier

“Eminönü” is not one universal boarding gate. Şehir Hatları’s official Eminönü pier page lists several pier names, including Evliya Çelebi, Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi and Galata (Eminönü 4).

Use this order:

  1. Open the official route for your destination: Kadıköy–Karaköy–Eminönü or Üsküdar–Karaköy–Eminönü.
  2. Read the departure from Eminönü section. Do not mistake an arrival time or a Karaköy departure for your sailing.
  3. Check the service-day notes; some sailings have restrictions.
  4. Use the route’s pier information to choose your walking destination after leaving the station.
  5. Before entering a pier, check the destination and next departure on its display. A nearby boat may serve another route or operator.

For an appointment or a booked activity, allow for the passage from the underground platform to street level and the separate walk to the pier. A station map pin is not your boarding gate.

Going to Üsküdar? You may not need to exit

If your aim is to reach Üsküdar rather than enjoy a ferry trip, stay with Marmaray: the official station selector places Üsküdar immediately next to Sirkeci. Choose an eastbound train whose destination display includes Üsküdar.

This avoids leaving the underground system, finding a pier and waiting for a ferry. It does not establish the fastest route to every address in Üsküdar; compare your final destination too.

Cağaloğlu and Ankara Caddesi: when this exit makes sense

Use Cağaloğlu for the Governor’s Office address on Ankara Caddesi. This is the exit named in the institution’s own directions.

Ankara Caddesi is also associated with the historic station area, so the street name alone is insufficient for choosing an exit. For a hotel or business, use its exact building entrance and street number to compare the final walk.

Luggage, strollers and wheelchairs

The Ministry of Transport’s accessibility guide documents lift wayfinding at Sirkeci. Look for Asansör / Elevator and the wheelchair symbol before committing to an escalator route.

The guide does not say which lift is working today. If stairs are impossible for you, confirm the operating route before leaving the platform area. Show this sentence:

“Merdiven kullanamıyorum. Perondan sokağa kadar çalışan asansörlü güzergâh hangisi?”
“I cannot use stairs. Which working lift route takes me all the way from the platform to the street?”

For luggage, distinguish yürüyen merdiven (escalator) from asansör (lift). An escalator sign does not promise a step-free journey.

If you have already taken the wrong exit

If you chose the wrong Sirkeci Marmaray station exit, locate your current street and your actual destination entrance. Compare the surface walk before paying to enter Marmaray again merely to reach another exit. A nearby destination may be easier to reach above ground.

If you are still inside and need the tram connection, ask:

“Sirkeci T1 tramvay durağına giden çıkış hangisi?”
“Which exit leads to the Sirkeci T1 tram stop?”

For ferries, name the destination: “Eminönü’nden Kadıköy vapurunun kalktığı iskele nerede?” means “Where is the pier for the ferry from Eminönü to Kadıköy?”

Can I rely on an old exit-number photograph?

Exit numbers and signs can change, so use destination names and the current signs as your main reference. For walking times and lift status on the day, check the operator’s notices or ask station staff.
