Travellers walking along a bright concourse inside Istanbul Airport

Istanbul Layover: Can You Leave the Airport at IST or SAW?

Whether you can leave the airport on an Istanbul layover depends on four things: your right to enter Türkiye, whether your bags are checked through, which airport you use (Istanbul Airport, IST, or Sabiha Gökçen, SAW) and how much time is left once you work back from your next flight. If any of these is uncertain, stay airside.

Last checked: 26 October 2026. This guide links to the official sources. Rules and airline programmes change, so confirm yours before you rely on them.

Can you enter Türkiye during an Istanbul layover?

Staying in the international transit area and passing through immigration are not the same. Whether you need a visa or another permission depends on your nationality and travel document. Check the official Türkiye e-Visa portal and your airline’s instructions. A boarding pass for your next flight does not grant entry by itself.

How much time do you really have on an Istanbul layover?

Work backwards from your next flight, not forwards from landing. Subtract each of these:

  1. The time you must be at check-in, bag drop or the gate, as set by your airline.
  2. Security and passport control on your return.
  3. The journey back to the airport, with extra time for traffic.
  4. The journey into the city.
  5. Disembarking, immigration and collecting bags, if you must collect them.

What is left is your real sightseeing time. There is no universal layover length that makes a city trip safe, so treat a short or delayed connection as a reason to stay at the airport.

Free Touristanbul city tour for long layovers

Turkish Airlines offers a free tour called Touristanbul. According to the airline’s Touristanbul FAQ, you can take part if you:

  • are connecting from one international flight to another with a layover of 6 to 24 hours at Istanbul Airport, and the layover fits the tour hours;
  • hold a Turkish Airlines ticket whose number starts with 235 (codeshare tickets sold by Turkish Airlines but flown by a partner count; tickets sold by a partner but flown by Turkish Airlines do not).

Register at the Touristanbul desk after passport and customs control, and arrive at least 30 minutes before the tour time. Tour routes and times change, so check the airline’s page for the current list.

Turkish Airlines Stopover in Istanbul

Turkish Airlines also runs a separate programme, Stopover in Istanbul. As described on the airline’s page, passengers connecting internationally through Istanbul Airport with a layover of at least 20 hours and up to 7 days can apply for complimentary hotel nights: one night in a 4-star hotel in economy, or two nights in a 5-star or boutique hotel in business class, with longer stays for some departure countries. Applications must be made at least 72 hours before the flight, not after you arrive, and the benefit can be used once per round trip. The hotel is not guaranteed, and the conditions have changed over time, so read the airline’s page before you book.

Leaving Istanbul Airport (IST)

IST is north-west of the historic centre. The M11 metro is the rail link, and reaching Sultanahmet or other central districts usually needs changes. Our Istanbul Airport to city centre guide compares the options for each district. Check service details on Metro Istanbul and the official airport website.

If you need somewhere to rest before the next flight, our Yotel Istanbul Airport guide explains the airport hotel option.

Leaving Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW)

SAW is on the Asian side. The M4 metro line reaches the airport, but European-side sights such as Sultanahmet take much longer to reach. With a short connection, a visit to the Asian side is more realistic. See our Sabiha Gökçen to Istanbul guide and the official SAW website.

Bags and luggage storage

Ask your airline whether your bags are checked through to your final destination. Do not assume a storage counter is open at your arrival time or reachable before immigration. Our Istanbul luggage storage guide lists the questions to ask.

When to stay at the airport

  • Your entry rights are unclear.
  • Your arrival is delayed.
  • You must collect and recheck bags.
  • Your connection involves a change of airport.
  • The return journey would leave you less than your airline’s deadline.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave the airport during a 6-hour layover in Istanbul?

Only if you can legally enter Türkiye and have no bags to recheck, and the travel and security time still leaves room. For eligible tickets, Touristanbul covers layovers from 6 hours.

Is the Istanbul layover tour free?

Touristanbul is free for eligible Turkish Airlines passengers on a 6 to 24 hour international connection at Istanbul Airport.

Is it easy to travel between IST and SAW?

No. They are on opposite sides of the city, so treat the transfer as a full journey and allow generous time.
