Does It Snow in Istanbul? What to Expect From Winter Snow

Snow in Istanbul is possible from December to March, but it is not reliable. Most winter days bring rain instead, and snow usually melts within a day or two. Heavy snowstorms are rare, but they can stop flights and ferries when they come.

Last checked: 30 October 2026. We could not retrieve the official figures from the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM). The numbers below come from travel and climate sites, and they disagree, so we give ranges. For a live forecast use MGM’s city forecast.

How often does it snow in Istanbul?

Estimates differ widely. One travel site gives about 7 snowy days a year, another says 3 to 7, and a third says 10 to 15. A forum post cites 19 days for an airport station, which other users questioned. January is the snowiest month in the sources that split the figures, with about 4 snowy days. February has about 2 days.

Wikipedia’s climate article says snow makes up only about a quarter of precipitation even in January and February. Plan for a wet winter, not a snowy one.

When snow is most likely

  • January: The best chance, about four snowy days in the sources we read.
  • February: About two snowy days.
  • December and March: Possible, but less likely. See our Istanbul in December guide for the weather and crowds that month.

What snow does to travel

A light fall usually causes only slippery streets. Heavy snow can disrupt transport, as these reports show.

  • January 2017: Heavy snow suspended ferries, cancelled flights and closed schools, as Anadolu Agency reported.
  • January 2022: Authorities halted all flights at Istanbul Airport for a time, and some ferries and roads closed, according to Khaleej Times.

These are past events, not forecasts. Check your airline and Şehir Hatları before you travel in a snowstorm.

What to pack for snow in Istanbul

  • Shoes with grip. Streets in Sultanahmet, Galata and Beyoğlu slope, so wet stone is slippery.
  • A waterproof coat and layers. Damp cold feels sharper near the water.
  • A scarf and gloves for ferries and outdoor viewpoints.
  • A flexible plan. Keep museum or indoor stops ready. Our museum pass guide helps you choose.

Is Istanbul in snow worth it?

Mosques, domes and the Bosphorus look striking under snow, and crowds are smaller. The cost is cold, wet days and a chance of delays. If you want a snowy trip, stay flexible and watch the forecast a few days ahead. Do not book a trip around snow, because the chance of a snow day in any week is low.
