Cruise ship moored at the Istanbul cruise port, Galataport, with the hills of Beyoğlu and Karaköy behind it

Galataport Istanbul: What’s Inside, Opening Hours and Services

Galataport is a 1.2 km stretch of Bosphorus waterfront in Karaköy, Istanbul, built around an underground cruise terminal. Above the terminal sit shops, restaurants, museums and a hotel. According to the official FAQ, the complex is open every day from 10:00 to 22:00, and the waterfront stays open to visitors even when a ship is in port.

Last checked: 4 November 2026. Figures and opening times come from Galataport’s official website, which is published in Turkish; we link the pages we used.

The figures come from the Galataport’s official project page and the official FAQ. Galataport opened to the public in October 2021, according to its own project page. However, we found two different opening dates for the cruise port in other sources, so we do not give one here.

How big is it?

The shoreline is about 1.2 km long. On OpenStreetMap routing, the walk from the middle of the complex to the Karaköy ferry pier takes roughly 8 minutes, and to the Galata Bridge roughly 13 minutes. In fact, the underground terminal is larger than the visible waterfront suggests, because the ship’s passengers, their luggage and the taxis and coaches that collect them are handled below ground. For example, the official site says the terminal can store 15,000 suitcases.

What is inside Galataport Istanbul

Shops, restaurants and cafés

The official project page names restaurants such as Roka, Sait Balık, Günaydın Steakhouse, Gina, Mezzaluna and The Populist, and the Istanbul Modern also has its own café and restaurant. Brands and opening hours change, so check the venue on the day. Also, we have not compared prices.

Museums

  • Istanbul Modern: a purpose-built museum by Renzo Piano. The Galataport site lists it as open every day except Monday, 10:00–18:00, and until 20:00 on Fridays. See our Istanbul Modern visitor guide for tickets.
  • Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum: run by Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and designed by Emre Arolat Architects. We could not find its opening hours on the official pages.
  • Müzeverse: described by Galataport as Türkiye’s first immersive virtual-reality museum, listed on its home page as open 10:00–22:00.

Historic buildings

Galataport also kept several older buildings. For example, the official list includes the Paket Postanesi (a former parcel post office), Merkez Han, the old Karaköy passenger hall, Çinili Han, the Tophane Clock Tower, the Tophane fountain and the Nusretiye Mosque. In addition, the square around the clock tower and the mosque is one of the easiest places to take photographs.

Hotel

The Peninsula Istanbul is the complex’s hotel. The official project page gives it 177 rooms, a ballroom for 820 seated or 1,300 standing guests, and a restaurant called Gallada.

Where to sit and rest

We could not find an official list of seating areas. The open spaces that Galataport itself names are the Museum Square by the Clock Tower, Rıhtım (Quay) Square and the waterfront promenade, and the cafés listed above are the practical place for a longer break. If you only need a short stop between a ship and a tram, the squares are a few minutes’ walk from the terminal exit.

Can you stay overnight?

The only accommodation the official pages describe is The Peninsula Istanbul, a 177-room hotel. They do not say whether cruise passengers can sleep ashore or what happens when a ship stays overnight, so ask your cruise line. For other areas to sleep in Istanbul, see our guide to where to stay.

Is Galataport Istanbul worth your time?

Galataport Istanbul is worth an hour if you want a coffee, a toilet, a cash machine or a look at the museums before you head into the old city. However, most visitors will still want to spend their limited time in Sultanahmet, which is not inside Galataport. Read our Karaköy walking guide for the neighbourhood next door.

Frequently asked questions

Is Galataport open to people who are not on a cruise?

Yes. The official site says the waterfront stays open when ships are in port, and Galataport reports more than 62 million visitors in its first five years. We found no entry fee or security checkpoint for the public areas on the pages we read.

Where do cruise passengers enter and leave?

The terminal entrance is in D Block.

Are there lockers for luggage?

Yes, at the D Block Visitor Center and in the P1 car park. The pricing is not published on the pages we read.

Does Galataport have a metro station?

Not as far as the official pages say. The nearest public transport stops they name are the Tophane and Fındıklı tram stops and the Karaköy and Kabataş ferry piers.
