Planning to travel and wondering whether your charger will fit the wall socket? Pick the country you live in and the country you are visiting below. The finder shows the plug and socket types, voltage and frequency for both, and tells you whether you need a plug adapter, a voltage converter, or nothing at all.
Last checked: 3 November 2026. Electrical standards change slowly, but sockets in individual hotels and older buildings often differ from the national standard, so a universal adapter is a safe choice for a multi-stop trip.
Travel adapter finder
Choose both countries to see the result. Example: United States of America → Turkey.
This finder is a planning aid, not an electrical safety guarantee. Always read the input rating printed on your device and charger before you plug it in abroad.
World map of plug types
The map colours each country by the family of its main plug type. Use the buttons to highlight where a single type is used, for example type G or type F. Very small islands are not drawn on the map, but every country and territory is listed in the table below.
Travel adapter or voltage converter: which one do you need?
A plug adapter only changes the shape of the connection so your plug fits the wall socket. It does not change the electricity. A voltage converter (or transformer) changes the voltage and is a different, heavier and more expensive product. For an independent safety checklist, see Electrical Safety First’s travel adaptor advice.
- Only the plug shape differs: a plug adapter is enough. This is the case for most travellers between Europe, the UK, Australia and Asia, because their mains is 220–240 V.
- Voltage differs and your device is dual-voltage: the label says something like Input: 100–240 V ~ 50/60 Hz. A plug adapter is enough. Most phone, laptop, camera and tablet chargers are built this way.
- Voltage differs and your device is single-voltage: for example a 120 V hair dryer plugged into a 230 V socket. It can burn out, so you need a suitable voltage converter or, more practically, a device made for the local voltage.
Plug and socket types A to O
Plug types are labelled with letters from A to O. The list below explains how to recognise each one.

Check each device, not just the country
- Phones, tablets, laptops and cameras: nearly always dual-voltage (100–240 V). A plug adapter is all you need.
- Hair dryers, straighteners, kettles and shavers: often single-voltage and high power. Check the label. Hotels in most countries provide a dryer.
- Grounding: a laptop charger with three pins needs a socket with an earth connection to keep it. An adapter can fit the pins but may leave the earth connection unused.
- Power strips: a plug adapter plus one travel power strip can charge several devices from a single socket. Check the strip’s voltage rating too.
Visiting Istanbul or travelling on from Turkey?
Turkey uses types C and F at 230 V and 50 Hz, the same as most of continental Europe. Electrical Safety First lists the same for Turkey. Travellers from the USA, Canada and Japan need a plug adapter, and should check any single-voltage device. For hotel, airport and city tips, see our plug, voltage and adapter guide for Istanbul.

How this page was compiled
The country data comes from public reference tables and travel guides that we compared against each other. Where sources agree we list the standard types. Where they disagree, for example Liberia, Suriname, Lebanon and the Maldives, we mark the country as mixed and recommend a universal adapter. All plug and socket illustrations on this page were created with an AI image tool to show the general shape. They are not manufacturer drawings, and real plugs differ slightly in size and finish between brands. The editor reviewed them for shape accuracy. We do not sell adapters.
