Quick answer: yes, the Istanbul Archaeology Museums are open again after a long restoration, and the Museum of the Ancient Orient, the part that was closed longest, has been back since 6 July 2026. On 18 September 2026 the Minister of Culture and Tourism announced that the restoration of the whole complex was finished. One thing to check before you go: the ministry’s own museum portal still carried an old closure notice for the Ancient Orient museum and the Tiled Kiosk when we looked on 28 October 2026.

What reopened
| Building | What it is | Status in the sources we found |
|---|---|---|
| Archaeology Museum (main building) | Neoclassical museum building that opened in 1891 | Reported as reopened to visitors in 2021 after earlier restoration; part of the ministry’s 2026 announcement |
| Museum of the Ancient Orient | Near Eastern, Egyptian and Anatolian antiquities | Reopened on 6 July 2026 |
| Tiled Kiosk Museum | Mehmed II’s 1472 pavilion with Seljuk and Ottoman tiles and ceramics | Restoration reported as complete; we could not confirm the visitor reopening date |
The complex sits in one garden on the Osman Hamdi Bey slope, between Gülhane Park and the first court of Topkapı Palace. According to the ministry’s museum portal, you can walk down from the palace or up from the main gate of Gülhane Park.
What is new
Based on the Anadolu Agency report of the minister’s announcement (18 September 2026) and Türkiye Today’s coverage of the Ancient Orient museum (6 August 2026):
- Reorganized Ancient Orient galleries. Assyrian, Sumerian, Babylonian, Hittite and Egyptian rooms were rearranged, and hundreds of objects that had been in storage are now on display.
- A new main entrance. The report says the entrance moved to Gülhane Square, where a new visitor reception center was added.
- Updated tile galleries in the Tiled Kiosk. The Iznik, Kütahya, Çanakkale, Early Ottoman and Seljuk galleries were refreshed, and about 54,000 tiles on the outside of the building were cataloged for individual conservation.
- Outdoor displays. The report mentions 38 artifacts along the Osman Hamdi Bey slope and about 140 pieces in the courtyard.
Highlights to look for in the Museum of the Ancient Orient
Türkiye Today lists these among the pieces on show:
- a clay copy of the Kadesh Treaty
- the Stele of Naram-Sin
- glazed brick reliefs connected to the Ishtar Gate of Babylon
- Hittite stone reliefs, Mesopotamian cuneiform tablets and Egyptian objects

Hours, ticket and address (from the official portal)
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s museum portal lists the Istanbul Archaeological Museums with the details below. Last checked: 28 October 2026.
- Hours: 09:00 to 18:30, box office closes at 17:30, open every day
- Ticket: listed at 15 € (euro)
- Address: Alemdar Caddesi, Osman Hamdi Bey Yokuşu Sokak, Gülhane, Fatih
Treat these numbers carefully. The portal page we read says it was last updated on 27 May 2026, which is before the reopening announcements. It still shows a notice that the Ancient Orient museum and the Tiled Kiosk are closed for restoration, and it lists several halls of the main building as closed. Third-party travel sites give other ticket prices, so we are not repeating them. Check the official museum page or call the museum on the number listed there before you go.
What we could not confirm
- Whether the Tiled Kiosk is open to visitors today. The sources describe its restoration as finished but do not give a reopening date.
- Whether the Museum Pass covers the whole complex and at what price. See our museum pass versus single tickets guide, which we update as official figures change.
- The current ticket price. The official portal lists 15 €, but its page predates the reopening.
