A Bosphorus cruise in Istanbul is one of the easiest ways to understand the city. From the water you can see Ottoman palaces, waterfront mansions, mosques, bridges and two continents in a single journey.
The good news is that you do not always need an expensive private yacht or dinner cruise. Istanbul’s official Şehir Hatları service operates scheduled Bosphorus tours, including short and long options.
Official Bosphorus Cruise Options
| Tour | Foreign passenger | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Long Bosphorus Tour | ₺640 return | A full half-day experience |
| Short Bosphorus Tour | ₺340 | Visitors with limited time |
| Moonlight Tour | ₺730 | Seasonal evening experience |
What Is the Long Bosphorus Tour?
The current official long-tour timetable departs from Eminönü in the morning and continues through Beşiktaş, Üsküdar, Kanlıca, Sarıyer, Rumeli Kavağı and Anadolu Kavağı. There is a break at Anadolu Kavağı before the return journey.
The current timetable lists departure from Eminönü at 10:35 and arrival at Anadolu Kavağı at 12:25. The return departure is listed at 15:00, arriving back at Eminönü at 16:40.
What Is the Short Bosphorus Tour?
The short tour is better when you want Bosphorus scenery but do not want to spend most of your day on the water. The current official timetable lists a daily departure from Eminönü at 14:40, with Üsküdar at 14:55 and Ortaköy at 15:10.
Always check the current operator timetable before leaving your hotel, especially outside peak summer periods.
Where Should You Sit?
Try to find a seat with an open view rather than staying inside for the entire trip. The best side changes as the boat moves, so there is no single perfect seat.
Bring a light jacket even in warm weather. Wind on the Bosphorus can make the ride feel cooler than the streets of central Istanbul.
Morning or Afternoon?
Morning is a strong choice for the long tour because the current schedule is built around a morning departure and an afternoon return. The short tour gives more flexibility if you want to combine the cruise with sightseeing in the old city.
Private Yacht or Public Ferry?
A private yacht offers privacy and flexibility, but it costs considerably more. A scheduled Şehir Hatları tour is the better fit for travellers who want the Bosphorus experience without paying for a private boat.
Another budget-friendly alternative is to use an ordinary public ferry between European and Asian districts. It is not marketed as a cruise, but the views can be excellent.
What Will You See?
- European and Asian shorelines.
- Historic waterfront palaces and mansions.
- Bosphorus bridges.
- Üsküdar and the Asian shore.
- Kanlıca and the northern Bosphorus on the long tour.
- Changing views of Istanbul’s skyline.
How to Combine a Bosphorus Cruise With Sightseeing
For a first visit, you can spend the morning around Sultanahmet and then move toward Eminönü for an afternoon short cruise. Another option is to make the long cruise the main event of the day and explore the historic peninsula on another day.
Our One Day in Istanbul itinerary can help you decide how much sightseeing to combine with the cruise.
Is a Bosphorus Cruise Worth It?
Yes, especially if you have never seen Istanbul from the water. The official scheduled tours make the experience relatively straightforward, and the scenery provides a completely different perspective from walking around the city.
Just remember that the current fares and schedules are not permanent. The official Şehir Hatları tariff currently lists ₺640 for the foreign-passenger long return tour and ₺340 for the short tour.
Before You Go
Check the official Şehir Hatları timetable on the day of travel. Weather, special events and seasonal schedules can affect services. Arrive early enough to board without rushing, especially on a clear weekend day.
